Eligible applicants need to apply online by following the link to register, or submit a completed application, documentation of nursery employment and the appropriate fees to the MNLA office by July 15th. Download the application form here.

LODGING: A room block is available at Country Inn and Suites at a reduced rate of $229/night. There are a limited number of rooms available at this rate. Book early to secure the discounted rate before the room block fills. Call the hotel at: 406.586-2230 and ask for the Montana Nursery & Landscape Association group rate, or book online using this link.

The certification tests are generally given twice a year, in January at the annual Montana Green Expo and in July at the annual Summer Tour. The exam consists of a plant identification test and a written test. The exam is based on the Certification Manual and on practical information gained from employment in the industry, and on identification of the correct genus, species, common name, and cultivar (if appropriate) for each plant.

The ID portion of the exam involves identifying 50 plant samples, and is based upon plants covered in Choosing Trees and Shrubs for Montana Landscapes, by George Evans and Alan Epps, as well as lists of Montana perennials and woody plants. These publications and lists are included in the manual. The second portion of the exam is a 200 question written exam on the principles and practices of virtually all aspects of the nursery industry. A passing grade is 75% for both parts of the exam. Bring at least two sharpened pencils to take the exam. We also recommend that you bring several sheets of scratch paper.

Please see the Education & Certification page on our site for details on eligibility and renewal as well as a number of additional forms and how to order your CPP Manual (a highly recommended book for preparing for the exam). Manuals can be ordered by submitting an order form to the MNLA office.

    • YES Compost - Using worms to transform food waste into nature's richest soil, we will tour YES Compost's vermiculture composting facility, Using worms to fulfill their mission as a compost collection company, they provide residential and commercial food scrap collection services for the Gallatin Valley. We will tour their facility, learn about their collection system, and how they are turning food waste into a nutrient-packed soil amendment through worm composting.
    • Westscape Wholesale Nursery - A wholesale grower of native and ornamental perennials and shrubs, Westscape is well-established as a supplier of quality locally-grown plant material. They specialize in propagation of hardy native and ornamental plant material that is adapted to our region's harsh environmental conditions. With a facility covering 12,000 sq. ft. of state-of-the-art greenhouse, plus an additional three acres of outdoor production space, Westscape is uniquely positioned to accept custom grow requests and supply the valley with hard-to-source native plant material.
    • Residential Landscape by: Design.5 Landscape Architecture - Design 5 is a landscape architecture studio dedicated to creating beautiful, functional, and sustainable outdoor spaces that contribute to the well-being of individuals, communities, and the environment in the Rocky Mountain West. We will tour one of their residential landscape design/installs, featuring an outdoor living area with expansive flagstone patio and custom wood walkways and benches. Custom metal planters are integrated into the front entry staircase, showcasing plantings that were selected for both sustainability and visual interest. This modern landscape is a perfect blend of functional entertainment space and aesthetic appeal.
    • Montana Seed Lab @ Marsh Laboratory - The State Seed Lab processes seeds from across Montana, assessing germination rate, purity, and the value of seed lots. This information helps the state's agriculture businesses determine the potential of a seed lot before planting to ensure adequate stand and max yield. We will get a look at how seeds are processed, tested, and ultimately certified. The seed lab provides testing services for the Montana Seed Growers Association and Montana Department of Agriculture, ensuring the seeds sold in the state are truthfully and accurately labeled.
    • Cashman Nursery - Growing since 1898, the Cashman family has a legacy in the nursery business. Originally founded in 1898 by Thomas Eugene Cashman in Minnesota, the business eventually made its way to Bozeman, MT where Cashman Nursery continues to grow and thrive under the oversight of Jerry, Jan, Mike, and Joe Cashman. Cashman's full-service garden center carries a huge selection of Northern-grown trees, shrubs, and over 300 varieties of perennial flowers, bedding plants, and seeds. They also run a full-service landscape division for residential and commercial projects around the Gallatin Valley. One of the trademarks of Cashman Nursery is their commitment to expertise - they proudly employ 12 Certified Plant Professionals and hold educational seminars throughout the year as part of their community outreach.
    • Visser Greenhouses - Home of the largest annual and perennial variety list in Montana, Visser's roots in the Gallatin Valley run deep. Opening in 1972, and moving to their current location in 1984, Visser has seen steady expansion until they reached more than 60 greenhouses. Each year, they ship millions of plants and have become one of Montana's largest wholesale operations. They offer an extensive selection of plants, including annuals, perennials, vegetables, and herbs in a wide range of sizes. When we tour Visser, they will be in the height of fall mum production; we will get a personal tour of the facility and learn exactly how they do everything they do - from spring annuals to fall mums.
    • Residential Landscape Site by: Outdoor Design Studios - Outdoor Design Studios brings a unique blend of landscape architecture and 20+ years in the landscape construction industry to offer beautiful, yet buildable and maintainable landscapes, for the Rocky Mountain region. From golf courses and  large developments to land planning and family residences, their experience drives creative designs and quality landscape installations for the Bozeman community. We will tour one of their residential landscape installations in the Manley Meadows subdivision, an area adjacent to the Riverside Country Club and surrounded by rolling farmland. The subdivision boasts an impressive 102 acres of open space that is maintained for the homeowners and closed to the general public. With an abundant amount of wildlife, the subdivision also features a trail system and sense of being removed from the hustle and bustle of town.
